How to Transfer Files to Siteground Using WinSCP

Updated on March 27, 2020 By Carolyn Leave a Comment

The last time I set up a blog (at least one per year) was summer last year. I followed the same steps in setting up WordPress in a directory (folder) on Siteground.

Everything went well. Same cPanel on Siteground.

WinSCP, an FTP client, makes it a breeze to transfer file between my computer to a web host.

Recently, I had a different result to my dismay.

I cannot transfer files to Siteground using WinSCP. Filezilla wouldn’t have worked either.

What’s Going On

It turned out that the new interface seemed to be the culprit. The new design of the site is dandy and easy to use.

I was able to set up a new website for my sibling in a few minutes without much fuss but there’s still a bit of a learning curve of finding things.

To my surprise, I missed the old, reliable cPanel. It seem daunting at first encounter. But you’ll get the hang of it.

Failed Attempts

I looked for information that I’ll use to access files on Siteground using WinSCP.

Note: By the way, the new interface (default) is only available to new clients.

Former clients has the option to switch to the new design. I’m not switching . . . yet.

How to find information on Siteground’s new website design:

  1. Log in to Siteground.
  2. Go to Websites and click SITE TOOLS of your chosen domain.
  3. Go to DASHBOARD. Here you’ll find site information like Name Servers.

It seems that nothing can go wrong? Well, I tried connecting to the host by providing information on WinSCP like what I used to do.

But with a new account, it seemed as though the old way wouldn’t do the trick.

The Solution

You may have skipped to this part right away. I would have done the same thing.

As a blogger, I thought of sharing what didn’t work and what does.

I thought of this solution from the start, but I saved it for last because I want to try other solutions first.

All attempts failed but this.

I created an FTP account on Siteground and use the information to log in using WinSCP.

Here’s how to create an FTP Account on Siteground.

  1. Log in to Siteground.
  2. Go to Websites and click SITE TOOLS of your chosen domain.
  3. Go to FTP Accounts (sidebar).
  4. Fill out the form on Create New FTP Account.
  5. Click Create.

The Account Name will look like accountname@domain.com which will be used as user name on WinSCP. I’ll show you in a bit.

FTP Account on Siteground

Quite easy right? It seems like this is how I will transfer files to Siteground from now on. Well I’ll get used to it.

To log in to WinSCP using the FTP account created on Siteground, simply provide the following information:

  • File protocol: FTP
  • Host name: your domain (eg.domain.com)
  • Port number: 21
  • User name: account name
  • Password

Next in my list is to learn how to transfer file through SFTP, a secure connection unlike FTP.

Do you like the new look of Siteground? How do you prefer to transfer files to a web host?
